FBR income tax refund: prepare a claim-ready document pack
Source check: 15 September 2026. Practical preparation guidance for Pakistan. Examples are illustrative; any rate or filing period must match your own transaction.
Confirm what the balance actually represents
A large deduction on a bank statement or salary certificate is not, by itself, a refund calculation. Start with the relevant return and computation, identify the supported taxes available for adjustment, and reconcile these with the liability. Leave disputed or unverified amounts visible in your working.
FBR’s refund guidance says the amount should appear in an electronically filed return and describes a separate application in Iris. That establishes the basic workflow; it does not promise that every claim will be accepted or paid within a fixed time.
Build one indexed file
| Section | What to include |
|---|---|
| Return | The submitted return, computation and acknowledgement for the relevant year. |
| Tax evidence | Payer certificates and available payment references, cross-referenced to each claimed amount. |
| Income evidence | Salary records, invoices or other documents explaining the underlying income. |
| Reconciliation | A schedule showing how eligible taxes less the liability produce the amount requested. |
| Application history | The application reference, submission date, correspondence, queries and replies. |
This is an organisational checklist, not a claim that every taxpayer must attach every item. Confirm the documents required by your application and any subsequent official query. Keep taxpayer identity and banking information consistent across the records.
Illustration: verify before asking for the full difference
Assume, only for this example, that eligible and supported adjustable tax totals Rs. 150,000 and the correctly computed liability is Rs. 120,000, with no other adjustments. The potential excess is Rs. 30,000. If Rs. 20,000 of the claimed tax cannot yet be verified, record that unresolved issue rather than presenting all Rs. 30,000 as confirmed.
Conversely, a genuine credit should not be discarded merely because a document is missing from your first folder. Request the certificate or investigate reporting, then revise the working on evidence. Keep an audit trail showing why the claim changed.
Keep the application distinct from the return
- Confirm the correct year and that the return’s refund figure is supported.
- Check the current refund provisions, time limit and procedural requirements for your case before applying.
- Use the official Iris application route and retain the reference and submission evidence.
- Track subsequent messages and answer each question with numbered supporting documents.
The general FBR webpage contains time-limit and ATL statements. Check those against the current law and the dates of your return, assessment and payment; do not calculate your last filing day from an undated summary alone. If time may be running out, have those dates reviewed promptly.
When you can proceed yourself
You can collect the records, reconcile a straightforward claim and use the official application guidance yourself. A document review is useful where there is an earlier amended return, disputed withholding, mixed income, inconsistent taxpayer details or an unresolved official query. Ask for a written scope that distinguishes preparing the claim from handling later correspondence.
When to request help
Build the pack from the excess-tax equation
A refund claim should show assessed liability, each admissible payment or withholding credit, and the resulting excess. For every credit, include payer identity, section, gross amount, tax amount, date, certificate and the matching Iris entry. Then reconcile the requested refund to the filed return and to the bank account registered for payment.
Keep a one-page control sheet showing “claimed,” “verified,” “missing” and “disputed.” If a payer certificate and FBR record differ, explain the gap and pursue correction instead of presenting both as if they agree. Retain the separate refund application, acknowledgement, replies to verification requests and final order; filing a return that displays an excess is not the same event as submitting and proving a refund claim.
Tell us the tax year, refund shown, filing date and whether an application or query already exists. Start with a short summary. Do not send passwords, PINs or one-time codes. Ask for the scope and professional fee before commissioning work.

Questions people also ask
Will the refund arrive automatically after filing?
FBR’s published process describes a separate application in Iris. Retain that application’s acknowledgement as well as the return.
Should I pay someone who guarantees approval?
Do not base an engagement on a guaranteed refund. Ask what will be reviewed, which documents are missing and what the fee covers. The authority decides the claim.
