Filing and FBR guide: Wealth statement difference: find the cause step by step
Quick answer: Reconcile the movement in assets less liabilities to supported inflows and outflows. Investigate missing or duplicated items; do not invent cash, gifts or loans just to make the difference zero.

Source check: 15 September 2026. Practical preparation guidance for Pakistan. Examples are illustrative; any rate or filing period must match your own transaction.

Put both years beside each other

Start with the previous submitted wealth statement, the current closing bank balances, asset purchase and sale records, outstanding loan balances, and a household spending schedule. Label the date of each balance. Mixing a current bank balance with the reporting date is an easy way to create a difference.

FBR’s completion guidance connects wealth movement with income and expenses. The table below is a preparation worksheet, not a substitute for the actual Iris form or a conclusion about the taxability of any receipt.

Worked example: where Rs. 100,000 can go missing

Worked example: where Rs. 100,000 can go missing
Illustrative itemAmount
Opening net wealthRs. 1,000,000
Supported income/inflows for this simplified exampleRs. 1,200,000
Household spending and other outflows, including tax paidRs. 900,000
Expected closing net wealthRs. 1,300,000
Assets less liabilities currently listedRs. 1,400,000
Difference to investigateRs. 100,000

The difference is a clue, not a suggested income entry. Check whether an asset was entered twice, an outstanding liability was missed, or a balance was taken from the wrong date. Recheck the opening figure too: a current-year worksheet cannot repair an earlier filing by silently changing the starting point.

Four movements that need careful handling

  • Transfer between your accounts: moving Rs. 100,000 from one personal bank account to another does not create a new external inflow. Match both sides.
  • Buying an asset with existing savings: cash falls while another asset appears. Track the purchase and its funding together so it is not mistaken for two separate uses of money.
  • Borrowing: a bank balance may increase alongside a genuine liability. Keep the loan agreement and repayment trail; a loan is not simply a balancing label.
  • Family support or a gift: preserve the real transfer evidence and identify the legal treatment separately. Do not assume that describing a receipt as a gift makes it exempt.

Estimate spending from records

Group household costs into housing, utilities, groceries, transport, education, health and other spending. Use statements and receipts, marking any reasonable estimate clearly in your working. Avoid counting the same expense once through card purchases and again when the card bill is paid. Separate transfers and loan principal from consumption.

Check shared expenses with your spouse or other household members so the same outflow is not duplicated in your own schedule. Keep your calculation consistent with whose money was used and whose asset or liability is being reported.

What a resolved difference looks like

Keep a short explanation of each correction: the original entry, the supporting document, the corrected entry and its effect. When finished, the worksheet should reconcile and every significant movement should have an explanation. FBR’s guide says successful submission is confirmed by the required forms moving to Completed Task; saving a draft is not the finish.

Request a review if opening wealth is unreliable, assets were omitted previously, overseas receipts are involved, or an unexplained amount remains. A zero difference alone does not prove that the underlying declarations are correct.

When to request help

Use a difference waterfall

Suppose opening net assets are Rs 3,000,000, declared income after tax is Rs 1,200,000 and household spending is Rs 900,000. Before gifts, loans or transfers, expected closing net assets are Rs 3,300,000. If the draft wealth statement shows Rs 3,550,000, the unexplained difference is Rs 250,000—not automatically extra income, but a prompt to trace missing liabilities, own-account transfers, asset cost and non-taxable supported receipts.

Test one category at a time and rerun the equation after each correction. Never plug the residual into “cash” or a family gift merely to make the screen reconcile. The final file should show the opening figure, each supported source and use, the closing figure, and why any classification changed from the prior return.

Review my wealth reconciliation

Tell us the tax year, size of the difference and whether the previous wealth statement is available. Start with a short summary. Do not send passwords, PINs or one-time codes. Ask for the scope and professional fee before commissioning work.

Questions people also ask

Can I add cash to remove the difference?

Only report cash you actually held and can reasonably support. Inventing a balance hides the problem instead of resolving it.

Is an asset purchase the same as household spending?

Track asset purchases separately in your working. They can change the mix of assets without creating the same net-wealth effect as consumption. Apply the actual return instructions when reporting.
