NTN registration in Pakistan

The NTN is the registration, not the filing. It takes a day or two and it is the prerequisite for everything else — the return, the ATL, the filer withholding rate.

Is this you?

You need an NTN — for a job, a bank, a business registration, or as the first step to becoming a filer.

What you get for Rs 1,500

  • Registration completed on FBR IRIS against your CNIC or business
  • IRIS credentials created and handed to you
  • Business activity, address and bank details correctly recorded at source
  • Confirmation of the NTN and what to do with it next

What we need from you

  • Colour copy of CNIC
  • Latest paid electricity bill for the registered address
  • Mobile number and email registered in your own name
  • For a business: rent agreement or ownership documents, and letterhead

How it runs

  1. 01Send CNIC and a bill

Two documents on WhatsApp. That is the whole intake for a salaried NTN.

  2. 02Registered on IRIS

Usually the same day, always within two working days.

  3. 03Credentials handed over

The IRIS login is yours. We do not hold it hostage.

  4. 04Next step, if you want it

The NTN alone does not make you a filer. Filing a return does — we can do that too.

Questions people actually ask

Does having an NTN make me a filer?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding in Pakistani tax. The NTN is registration — it puts you on the taxpayer register. Filer status means appearing on the Active Taxpayer List, and that requires an income tax return actually filed for the relevant tax year. Plenty of people hold an NTN for years while still paying non-filer withholding rates on every transaction.

Do I need a business address for a salaried NTN?

No. A salaried individual registers against a residential address, evidenced by a recent electricity bill for that address. A business address and supporting tenancy or ownership documents are only needed where you are registering a sole proprietorship or a company.

Can the registration be done without visiting an FBR office?

Yes, for the great majority of cases. Registration runs on IRIS and biometric verification is generally handled through NADRA e-Sahulat rather than at a tax office. Where a case does require an in-person step, we tell you before you engage rather than discovering it midway.

I already have an NTN from years ago. Is it still valid?

Almost certainly, and you should check before creating a new one. Legacy NTNs were migrated onto the IRIS system and for individuals the CNIC now functions as the registration number. What usually needs attention is not the number but the profile behind it — a stale address, a closed bank account or an incorrect business activity, any of which can cause a return to be rejected.
