Get your exact figure in four steps
- Get the IMEI. Dial
*#06#, or find it in Settings. Check every IMEI if the device uses dual SIM or eSIM. - Check the status on PTA's Device Verification System, or send the IMEI to 8484. Do this before buying any used handset sold to you as "PTA approved".
- Apply through the Device Registration System with your CNIC or passport details. It generates an FBR Payment Slip ID (PSID) showing the exact amount assessed.
- Pay the PSID through online banking, a mobile wallet or a bank branch, and keep the receipt with the IMEI recorded against it.
You live and work outside Pakistan, you still hold property, bank accounts or rental income here, and nobody has ever told you in writing what your status actually is.
Why the amount moves
The total is not one charge. FBR applies customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax, income tax at import stage and the handset levy to an assessed USD value, then converts at the rate on the assessment date. Two people registering the same phone weeks apart pay different amounts.
Worth knowing: despite the name, this is not PTA's money. PTA has publicly clarified that the duties are applied and collected by FBR directly, that DIRBS is provided free as a public facility, and that rate queries should go to FBR. PTA clarification So if an assessment looks wrong, your counterparty is FBR and Customs.
CNIC or passport
The passport route is roughly Rs 20,000 cheaper on these models, but it is an eligibility, not a choice. It requires verifiable international travel records within the permitted window after arrival, and DIRBS rejects the passport where no qualifying travel exists. There are also limits on how many devices one identity can register in a year across all routes — check the current limit before buying handsets for family.
The deadline
Register within the permitted period after first inserting a SIM. Miss it and the IMEI is blocked across Jazz, Zong, Ufone, Telenor and SCO — Wi-Fi only from then on. Visitors and overseas Pakistanis can instead use the temporary registration facility, which keeps a personal device working for a limited stay without paying the full permanent amount.
Compare the real total
| Route | What to add up |
|---|---|
| Bring it yourself | Overseas price + registration + exchange rate on assessment date |
| Courier or family | The same, plus handling and the risk of detention pending clearance |
| Buy PTA-approved locally | Retail price with duties already in it, plus warranty and full resale value |
| Buy non-PTA locally | Discounted price + the registration you will still owe + restricted resale |
The last two are usually closer than they look. For the wider import mechanics see the customs and import duties guide, and for funding purchases from abroad, the overseas Pakistani guide.
Source check: 14 September 2026. The rupee figures are estimates published by PhoneWorld on 10 September 2026 and are reproduced with that attribution; they are not FBR rates and no Valuation Ruling for the iPhone 18 series had been identified at the date of writing. Apple's USD prices and the 9 September 2026 launch of the Pro, Pro Max and Duo are from reporting of Apple's announcement. PTA's statement that the duties are FBR's is from PTA's published clarification. The levy composition is from FBR's Mobile Devices Regularization page and secondary analysis, not verified line by line against the current SROs. Get your own PSID from DIRBS before paying anything. This page will be updated when the Valuation Ruling issues.

Questions people also ask
Will the final amount be higher or lower than these estimates?
It can move either way. The assessed customs value is set in USD, so a weaker rupee raises the rupee amount without any policy change. Working against that, the National Assembly Finance Committee recommended a 50 per cent cut in mobile device taxes in April 2026; a recommendation is not law, but it means the direction of travel is not only upward. Check the PSID rather than budgeting off a figure you read weeks earlier.
Can I register on passport instead of CNIC to save Rs 20,000?
Only if you qualify. The passport route needs verifiable international travel records within the permitted window after arrival, and the system rejects it where no qualifying travel exists. It is a concession for travellers and overseas Pakistanis bringing in a personal device, not an option a resident can pick to pay less.
Is the standard iPhone 18 included in these figures?
No, because it has not launched. Apple announced only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e are reported for spring 2027, so no assessed value exists for them at all.
What happens if I do not register in time?
The IMEI is blocked from Pakistani networks — no calls, SMS or mobile data on any operator. The phone still works on Wi-Fi, which is why unregistered handsets sell cheaper. Registration generally remains possible afterwards but late regularisation is a separate procedure and can cost more.
Is a non-PTA iPhone 18 worth buying?
Do the full sum before deciding. The non-PTA discount is roughly the registration cost you are deferring, so the two totals usually land closer than the headline gap suggests — and the unregistered handset carries a weaker warranty position and a much smaller resale market.
Does paying this make me an FBR filer?
No. Device registration is a customs and indirect tax event and does not change your Active Taxpayer List status. It is worth noting separately that a handset at this price is a documented purchase, so for anyone who files, the relevant question is whether the funding is traceable in the wealth statement.
