FBR notice: organise the evidence before drafting a reply
Source check: 15 September 2026. Practical preparation guidance for Pakistan. Examples are illustrative; any rate or filing period must match your own transaction.
Identify what you actually received
A request for information, a show-cause notice, an assessment order and a recovery communication can require different actions. Do not assume that every document can be answered with the same “notice reply” template. Save every page, attachment and relevant delivery record.
Verify the communication through official FBR channels and your own account where applicable. A missing portal entry does not, on its own, establish that a paper document is invalid. If identity or authenticity is uncertain, obtain confirmation through the authority’s official contact route before providing sensitive records or paying.
Write a one-page case summary
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Document | Type, reference, issuing office and statutory provision shown. |
| Period and issue | Tax year or period, amounts mentioned and the requested explanation. |
| Timing | Issue date, receipt/service details, stated deadline and any later communication. |
| Existing filing | Submitted return, relevant working and any earlier response or order. |
| Current action | Who is reviewing, what is missing and what needs attention first. |
Build an issue-by-issue index
Number the issues exactly as they appear in the document. Against each, write your factual explanation in one or two sentences and list the supporting documents. Keep legal arguments separate from factual assertions so the reviewer can see what is established and what needs advice.
Illustration: a query refers to bank credits of Rs. 1,200,000 while your sales schedule totals Rs. 900,000. Before claiming that the Rs. 300,000 difference is a transfer between your accounts, locate both sides of the actual transfer and the account ownership evidence. If the trail is incomplete, mark it incomplete. Do not invent a loan or gift explanation.
Preserve the original records
Keep source files unchanged and put annotations in a separate index. Use clear filenames such as “Issue-2-bank-credit-reference” and a simple page index. FBR’s record-keeping guidance emphasises retaining return records. Keep relevant material while an issue remains unresolved; do not routinely delete evidence during a live matter.
If an important document is missing, record who holds it, when it was requested and when a response is expected. A large unlabelled upload can make a genuine explanation harder to follow. Share only records relevant to the issue through an agreed private channel.
Treat the deadline as a separate task
Record the stated deadline immediately and have the applicable response or remedy period checked against the actual provision and service facts. There is no universal response period for every FBR document. Do not assume that requesting more time, contacting an adviser or starting negotiations changes the deadline.
Where the document is an order, recovery step or time-sensitive communication, obtain appropriately qualified help promptly. The evidence pack helps the professional assess it; it is not itself a filed response, an appeal or an extension application.
Keep proof of the final action
Review the final version and attachments before authorising submission. Retain the submitted material and available acknowledgement, and assign someone to monitor the next communication. Ask whether the engagement covers only drafting, submission assistance or subsequent proceedings. Scope each stage explicitly rather than assuming one fee covers every future issue.
When to request help
Number the evidence around each allegation
Create an issue index before writing the reply. For every paragraph or adjustment in the notice, state the amount questioned, your position, the supporting schedule and the exact attachment numbers. A bank statement dumped into one PDF makes the officer search for your answer; a marked page tied to a reconciliation makes the evidence reviewable.
Keep three versions: the notice as received, the signed response as filed, and the complete submitted attachment set. Record the portal acknowledgement and submission time. Where a document is unavailable, say what was requested, from whom and when; do not describe missing evidence as enclosed. A response matrix also reveals conflicts early—for example, sales in one schedule that do not reconcile with withholding reported by customers.
Tell us the document type, tax year, stated deadline and whether any reply or order already exists. Start with a short summary. Do not send passwords, PINs or one-time codes. Ask for the scope and professional fee before commissioning work.

Questions people also ask
Can I use a standard response deadline from another blog?
No. The actual document, provision, service details and applicable procedure determine what must be done and when.
Does collecting this file count as replying to FBR?
No. The file is preparation. The response or remedy must be taken through the applicable process, with submission evidence retained.
